Did you know that fires caused by smoking result in more deaths than any other type of fire?

The London Fire Brigade have revealed that three1 fires a day were linked to smoking last year, and could be prevented by taking the following precautions:

·      Never smoke in bed, or on a soft chair or sofa if you think you may fall asleep.

·      Be extra vigilant when drinking alcohol or taking prescription medicines.

·      Use a sturdy ashtray and empty it regularly to avoid overflow.

·      Don’t leave a lit cigarette, cigar or pipe laying around.

·      Stub cigarettes out properly and make sure they are cold, or preferably wet, before putting them in the bin.

·      Keep lighters and matches out of children’s reach.

·      Never smoke if you use medical oxygen or an air flow pressure release mattress.

·      If you use paraffin-based emollient creams, seek a non-flammable alternative.

·      Consider using fire resistant bedding and nightwear.

Of course, the best way to keep your home and health safe is to quit smoking altogether, and as we’re just about to enter Stoptober, now is the time to do so.

Every year the Department of Health launch the Stoptober campaign to challenge smokers to give up smoking for 28 days. Those that do so are five2 times more likely to quit for good.

Over 190, 000 people have signed up for the challenge so far. Register your name HERE to get your free starter pack.
