Step into the past with Battersea’s Victorian Day
155 years ago the Temporary Home for Lost and Starving Dogs opened its doors in Holloway, taking in stray dogs from London’s streets. Since 1860 over 3.1 million Dogs and Cats have passed through their doors. Now known as Battersea Dogs & Cats home, they are celebrating their Victorian heritage Saturday 3 October.
The public is invited to tour the kennels and cattery, and learn about what it was like to be a stray dog on London’s streets in the 1860s. This is a unique chance to experience the sights, sounds, tastes and smells of life as it was for it’s early residents.
At lunchtime, a hearty plate of pie and mash will be available. There will be a contest to find the best Victoria sponge and visitors will get a piece of the action choosing from a range of our tempting treats to enjoy for themselves. As well there will be a sweet shop stand with a selection of ‘old favourites’.
You can also step away from the animals and indulge in accordion-playing musician or try your luck at some of the games from yesteryear.
This event is to pay homage to their founder Mary Tealby.

Saturday’s Battersea Victorian Day will take place from 10.30am-3pm 3 October. Entry is £2 for adults/£1 for children — no need to book.
