Legionella scare in bags of compost

POSTED ON: Monday, 21st July 2014

BY: WPJ Heating

A recent report claims bags of compost as the likely source of a cluster of legionella cases between August and October 2013. Six cases were confirmed and one probable case of Legionella longbeachae was found in the Lothian and Tayside areas of Scotland. Soils and composts are considered to be a major source of human infection with Legionella longbeachae sold through garden centres, along with other composted materials such as bark and sawdust. Older people are more at risk. Health Protection Scotland reported that from the 7 cases reported, all of them had spent time in the garden prior to their illness, and six had bought compost in the two weeks before, although investigation showed that all the products had been bought at different times and from different premises. The compost originated in five different manufacturers at five different sites in England, Scotland, Ireland and Northern Ireland and five samples tested by investigators which were linked to patients, tested positive for Legionella longbeachae. They did conclude however, that it was not possible to pinpoint the exact source of the Legionella longbeachae to any one particular product. It could easily have been a combination of factors which increased the risk of the infection, including the warm spell of weather. The 11th Annual Combatting Legionella & Water Treatment conference, will be taking place on 24-25 September at Holte Suite, Aston Villa Park, Birmingham. A comprehensive and cutting-edge event that will ensure engineering and facilities management teams are able to prevent legionella bacteria and comply with water safety regulation.
